Sacred Spain
a Documentary Trilogy about Flamenco as an Oral Tradition
During the last century, Flamenco has grown to be a world wide renown performing art form, taught at universities and staged at the most prestigious theaters in the world. Most recently, flamenco has become a potent industry with thousands of related products being produced and sold every year all over the globe.
Before all of this, Flamenco was a folk art, a way of life: we sang and danced at Christmas celebrations, at pilgrimages, at our ancestral spring rituals, at weddings, while working on the fields. My grandmother used to sing for us, by the oil lamps during the winter storms so we will not be afraid, or she would sing for us Flamenco lullabies to put us to sleep. But the culture in Spain is rapidly changing. People don’t take the time to dance and sing for each other as much as they used to.
However, there are a few times during the year, when we still gather, dance and sing all night long as in the good old days. Sacred Spain Trilogy documents these rare occasions audio-visually in their natural environment, bringing to the general public the rarely seen, profound expression of Flamenco as a rite, a celebration, a way of life.
